Purpose of this phase is to develop the project in order to achieve approvals from the Classification Society, National Authority and other related authorities as well as define the project to meet the Owner’s requirements. This means that for efficient Basic Design Class and Flag should be decided. This is of course the case when shipbuilding contract is signed. Simultaneously the project will be technically defined to allow procurement of main equipment. Basic Design cannot proceed without selection of makers for main systems, as makers’ data is required for the design to proceed.
Basic Design is typically ordered/carried out by the yard but can be carried out on behalf of the Owner as well, even before the shipbuilding contract is signed. This however means that the Owner may have to make the classification agreement as well as select main makers, subject to shipbuilding contract.
Hull form optimization and model testing is normally carried out in two steps:
We carry out 10-15 model test series a year at different European model basins. Successful execution requires experience and knowledge in developing the hull form, and the model tests should be carried out until all parties see that there is no further potential in improving the design.
The process should be specified accordingly, allowing the iterative process not just aiming up to specified contract speed. We have very good experience in managing this process to a successful end result, far better than originally specified.
Basic and detail design schedules are often overlapping. The Basic design is finished when all approvals have been received. We are typically carrying out 4-6 basic design projects a year including technical procurement handling as well.
